The Health Dangers of IV Drug Use

IV drug use often causes more intense highs, making it difficult for someone to gauge how much of a drug they have taken. Prompt treatment is needed as this condition can develop and spread quickly. As necrotizing fasciitis develops, it destroys the tissues beneath the skin.

Bacterial infection

  • Sadly, something called the “drug ceiling effect” can occur, where the drug will reach its maximum effect regardless of taking higher doses.
  • Many prescription drugs contain a built-in safety feature known as a time-release mechanism, and crumbling these products to dissolve and inject them intravenously disremembers this safety feature.
  • On average, approximately 80% of people do not exhibit any symptoms of hepatitis.
  • Some of those complications, like HIV, can spread and create public health problems.

Injection injuriesare injuries caused by injecting a needle into your skin.

An early diagnosis can increase the chance of effective treatment and minimize the potential for possible medical complications. Bacterial infections from IV drug use may occur when the germs on the skin are pushed into the body when a needle is used. Skin ulcers are a common complication that can occur for those who misuse intravenous drugs. Abscesses are a common complication of intravenous drug use, resulting in an uncomfortable collection of pus under the skin.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Infection

  • However, as addiction worsens as addicts chase faster highs, they will become most likely to consider (or start) taking intravenous distribution (as IV Drug use is called) of drugs such as heroin or cocaine.
  • HIV is only normally transmitted through anal or vaginal intercourse or by contaminated medical equipment.
  • IV is commonly used to provide nourishment to people who cannot orally ingest food or water.
  • The difficulties apply, not so much to the treatment of acute pain — where advice to divide the daily dose of methadone or buprenorphine and add other analgesic medications including opiates may be appropriate — but to the management of long-term pain.

Using a dual diagnosis treatment model, both health conditions are treated simultaneously, each as a different problem. Advanced integrated care is the most effective treatment for this dual condition. They claim that more and more people are turning to alternative medications that are less addictive.

Mental Health Resources

Finding the right one for yourself or a loved one suffering from IV drug addiction will depend on several factors. There are several types of specific IV drug treatment programs. It is critically important to detox under the direct supervision of a healthcare professional trained in this form of treatment. However, several viral infectious diseases are still transmitted between IV drug users, including hepatitis C (HCV), hepatitis B (HBV), and HIV/AIDS. For example, opiates such as heroin can become physically addictive after only a few injections.

While misusing any drug is dangerous, IV drug use risks may lead to severe health complications. Intravenous (IV) drug use can cause many adverse effects on health and long-lasting medical complications. CDC’s is it safe to mix alcohol with lipitor infectious disease programs work to implement evidence-based prevention programs in school and community settings, and to stop the spread of infectious diseases like hepatitis C, hepatitis B, and HIV among people who inject drugs. IV drugs are often preferred over oral capsules because intravenous injection gets the desired substance to the brain much faster. Nearly all drugs can be injected intravenously, but some are more commonly used than others.

Injection Injuries

Bacillus anthracis causes anthrax when spores, which can survive in the environment for decades, enter the body through abrasions or injection, inhalation or ingestion. Surgery for IE is not generally advisable due to the potential for prosthetic valve infection, although some authors support implantation of bioprosthetic valves, with 41% survival at 10 years reported.21 Empirical treatment for lung abscesses should cover S aureus, Gram-negative bacteria and anaerobes.

Skin and soft-tissue infections

If you have been taking intravenous drugs for a long time, you may need to undergo a detoxification procedure first. By participating in harm reduction programs such as needle and syringe exchange programs, IV drug users can receive clean and sterile needles, reducing the risk of infecting others with infectious diseases. A person who is addicted to drugs seeks these substances regardless of the negative social, emotional, and physical effects they are likely to experience.

Misusing drugs may provide a false sense of energy, causing the body to need more calories and energy to stay awake for extended periods. Continual intravenous drug use can cause sudden and significant weight loss. One of the most common symptoms of vein collapse is cold hands or feet due to reduced circulation.

Hepatitis C

Through the indirect use of intravenous drugs, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, or other sexually transmitted diseases may be caused. Combine non-sterile objects and inadequate hygiene, and bacteria from liquids increases the risk of an abscess or a skin infection much more significantly than did contaminated objects by themselves. Issuance of syringes with drugs because of the use of a needle or syringe results in the risk of infectious diseases, poisoning, and cardiovascular disease.

Hepatitis Cvirus (HCV) is another type of infection that is typically only transmitted through blood. The best way to avoid HIV and AIDS is to practice safe sex and avoid medical equipment and needles that have been used before. There is no cure for AIDS, but there are manymedicationsthat can be used to slow the progression of the disease and provide relief from some symptoms. Sharing a needle that has been used by another person can create the risk of catching bloodborne illnesses like HIV. HIV is only normally transmitted through anal or vaginal intercourse or by contaminated medical equipment.

Cellulitis

Factors such as continuing injection (known to increase recurrence risk) may be more relevant. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is common, and in addition to the acute dangers causes poor quality of life from chronically swollen and sometimes ulcerated legs.5 Pharmaceutical management of DVT poses particular challenges both in terms of the choice of anticoagulant and in decisions about length of treatment. There may also be opportunities for primary care to be involved in hepatitis C treatment through new commissioning routes.4 This group represents the major cause of hepatitis C infection in the UK; the RCGP has done much to make GPs aware of the connection and arrange appropriate testing and follow-up.

It can be challenging for a person to inject drugs into the vein alone. Finding these items can be a telltale sign that an individual is engaging in IV drug use. Both conditions require prompt medical treatment and can become life-threatening if not adequately treated. Abscesses or even ulcers can also develop with continued intravenous drug use. The most common injection site for injections is the forearm.

We provide innovative treatments, including withdrawal management, trauma therapy programs and relapse prevention. Some of those complications, like HIV, can spread and create public health problems. Injecting a drug is one of the most dangerous forms of drug misuse, as it bypasses your skin’s natural defense systems.

Usually, an individual keeps these objects together in a kit. You may also discover pill bottles, balloons, or baggies that contained the drug. When a drug user injects a drug, they require certain equipment. In addition, cellulitis leads to skin often appearing taut and glossy, while necrotizing fasciitis results in darkened skin patches as tissues begin to die. With each of these conditions, skin becomes red, swollen, and warm.

Except Marijuana all other types of drugs can be injected, heroin is the most rampant. Injections of liquids are given intravenously with the assistance of a syringe connected to a needle. Intravenous drug use has been a public health concern for decades, particularly in the context of the opioid epidemic. The information we provide is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.

These may include which drugs are being taken and how long they have been administered intravenously. While the HIV infection rate has steadily dropped, hepatitis C remains a high-risk viral pathogen with a prevalence rate of still nearly 20 percent. This is further complicated and exacerbated by poor injection technique, infections, and irritation from chemicals. IV drugs damage veins due to the nature of repeated injections, often in the same areas.
